Overcoming math anxiety
Overcoming math anxiety
Experience math anxiety is something that is familiar to many of us. However, for some people math anxiety, can be a serious problem that affects their ability to learn and enjoy mathematics. Nothing changes, math anxiety can literally turn some people off of math, forcing them to believe they "can not do math" and even going to cause them to shy away from a viable career option, because otherwise a particular job "involves mathematics.
Just Because "It's In Your Head" does not mean it is not real …
The effects of math anxiety are real. Recent studies have shown that math anxiety has an actual effect on brain function as a negative impact on ability to perform mathematical tasks. This is not surprising since most of us intuitively know that when you feel afraid or intensely nervous or frustrated you tend to have difficulty concentrating.
Sources of Math Anxiety
Memorizing without understanding – Somewhere along the line, many of us had a negative experience with math that may have been reinforced by social conditioning. Traditionally in North America, mathematics was taught as a series of formulas to remember, with only a wink eye of passing the underlying logic behind them.
For many of us, this lack of focus on the "why" certain formulas work was very problematic. Of course you may have remembered the formula, but what about when the problem appears in a familiar context or situation? In these cases, without understanding of why and how a formula works, you may find it very difficult or impossible recognize that this is a situation in which a specific formula is appropriate. And without understanding why something works, the memorization and application forms, even in situations where we recognize that the formula can be used became more delicate and more prone to errors.
Sexism – Unfortunately, until very recently, many young women have not received reinforcement of the same building confidence about their ability to successfully do math that young men have received. Parents, teachers and advisers have tended to emphasize the importance of math skills for young men while failing to emphasize the importance of skills math for young women. While this has certainly changed for the better in recent years, his legacy is still being felt.
The measures to overcome math anxiety
Begin by acknowledging that you have. Denial of its presence is quite common that many people feel shame about being worried. But you can not overcome something that you do not recognize, then tell a friend or classmate about it. Ask yourself when you began to feel this way. Think of what "mathematical situations" create a sense of anxiety
Stop the negative self-talk. Part of math anxiety is self reinforcing failure, assuming you fail and not try later.
treated as a new mathematical language. Mastery requires practice and repetition. Take time to learn new mathematical ideas. mathematical practice regularly.
Understanding new ideas – Do not just memorize stages. Try to understand how and why an idea works mathematics.
Ask lots of questions, including "why". Some teachers do not always know the "why" of a particular mathematical idea, but do not be deterred. Talk with other students and ask other teachers.
Pay attention to these examples in your math text. They are there because they show the main ideas without other factors external to confuse things. Play with them. Work through them.
Find others who are interested in mathematics and discuss with them the ideas you learn. Having to put ideas into words or explain a concept to someone is a great way to build your understanding.
If you do not understand an idea or concept, so do not wait to get help. The longer you wait, the more things will get blurry. Ask your teacher or a friend using the same day you encounter a problem you do not receive.
Focus on what you can do. Often, beginning with what you know the answers to what you do not know will begin to jump you.
